# Data pipeline architecture for large-scale web scraping projects

**TL;DR** – Separate concerns into ingest, queue, process, store, and monitor layers. Use a message buffer (Redis/RabbitMQ), stateless workers, idempotent writes, and observability (metrics, logs, alerts). See our [pricing](https://alterlab.io/pricing) page for cost‑based scaling guidance.

## 1. Ingestion layer
Raw HTML (or structured output) lands here. Keep ingesters thin: they call the scraping API, apply basic retry logic, and push payloads to a queue.

```python title="scraper_ingest.py"
import requests, redis, os, time
r = redis.from_url(os.getenv("REDIS_URL"))
API_KEY = os.getenv("ALTERLAB_KEY")
def fetch(url):
    resp = requests.get(
        "https://api.alterlab.io/v1/scrape",
        headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {API_KEY}"},
        json={"url": url, "formats": ["json"]},
        timeout=30,
    )
    resp.raise_for_status()
    return resp.json()
while True:
    url = get_next_url()  # from your source list or DB
    try:
        data = fetch(url)
        r.lpush("raw_html", json.dumps(data))
    except Exception as e:
        log_error(url, e)
    time.sleep(0.1)  # polite pacing
```

## 2. Queueing layer
A durable buffer decouples spikey ingest from steady processing.

- **Redis LIST** – simple, fast, supports BRPOP for blocking workers.
- **RabbitMQ** – richer routing, dead‑letter exchanges for failed jobs.
- **Apache Kafka** – when you need replayability and multi‑consumer fan‑out.

Pick one that matches your ops maturity; all integrate with the AlterLab API via standard HTTP clients.

## 3. Processing layer
Stateless workers pull from the queue, transform data, and write to storage. Idempotency is key—design each worker to safely retry without duplication.

**Typical worker flow**

1. `BRPOP raw_html` → get JSON payload
2. Optional: run **[Cortex AI extraction](https://alterlab.io/docs)** for schema‑less data
3. Validate/clean (e.g., price → float, date → ISO)
4. Upsert into destination (PostgreSQL, Snowflake, S3)

```python title="worker.py"
import json, redis, psycopg2, os
r = redis.from_url(os.getenv("REDIS_URL"))
conn = psycopg2.connect(os.getenv("PG_DSN"))
while True:
    _, payload = r.brpop("raw_html")
    record = json.loads(payload)
    # Example: Cortex AI step (if you enabled AI extraction)
    # record = call_cortex(record)
    upsert_record(conn, record)  # your idempotent upsert
```

## 4. Storage layer
Choose based on query patterns:

- **Relational (PostgreSQL/MySQL)** – for transactional updates and complex joins.
- **Columnar (Snowflake, BigQuery)** – for analytics on large, flat event tables.
- **Object store (S3/GCS)** – for raw HTML/archive and cheap long‑term retention.

Keep raw payloads for at least 30 days to enable reprocessing if schemas change.

## 5. Monitoring & alerting
Instrument each layer with Prometheus‑compatible metrics:

- **Ingest** – requests/sec, error rate, latency per domain.
- **Queue** – depth, age of oldest message.
- **Workers** – processing time, success/failure counts.
- **Storage** – write throughput, disk usage.

Set alerts on queue depth > 100k or worker error rate > 5 %. Use Grafana dashboards for real‑time visibility.

## 6. Anti‑bot handling at scale
When targets deploy CAPTCHAs, rate limits, or fingerprinting, offload the complexity to a dedicated anti‑bot solution. Our [smart rendering API](https://alterlab.io/smart-rendering-api) manages header rotation, JavaScript rendering, and automatic retries, letting your workers stay focused on data transformation.

## 7. Getting started quickly
Spin up a minimal pipeline in under 15 minutes:

1. Sign up for a free AlterLab account ([sign up](https://alterlab.io/signup)).
2. Install the Python SDK (`pip install alterlab`).
3. Follow the [quickstart guide](https://alterlab.io/docs/quickstart/installation) to configure API keys.
4. Deploy the ingest script above to a small VM or container.
5. Hook it to a local Redis instance and run a single worker.

From there, scale out workers, add a managed queue service, and plug in your preferred data warehouse.
