TL;DR

This update introduces worker metadata visibility in the JSON services endpoint and fixes critical API error handling for spend limits. We also improved infrastructure stability through better PgBouncer management and more resilient database WAL archiving.

Infrastructure and API Reliability Improvements

Maintaining a high-availability scraping platform requires constant refinement of the underlying orchestration layer. This week, our engineering team focused on three pillars: observability, error resilience, and deployment stability.

Enhanced Observability: Worker Metadata

To provide better debugging capabilities for complex scraping pipelines, we have enabled the ability to read worker metadata via the JSON services endpoint (#32818). When running large-scale distributed tasks, knowing the specific state and identity of the worker instance can be the difference between a quick fix and hours of log searching.

This metadata is now exposed in the JSON response, allowing you to map specific job failures to specific worker environments.

Fixing API Error Handlers

We identified and resolved a regression in our API layer where spend_limits error handlers were raising a TypeError (#32818). The issue stemmed from passing structlog keyword arguments to the standard library logger, which does not support them. This prevented users from receiving clear feedback when they hit their budget caps.

The fix ensures that budget-related errors are logged correctly and returned to the user with actionable information. This is critical when managing pricing and spend limits across large teams.

Python
import alterlab
from alterlab.exceptions import SpendLimitError

client = alterlab.Client("YOUR_API_KEY")

try:
    # Attempting a heavy scrape that might exceed limits
    response = client.scrape("https://example.com")
except SpendLimitError as e:
    # Now correctly handled without TypeError
    print(f"Action required: {e}")

Deployment Stability: PgBouncer and WAL Archiving

Infrastructure deployments often face "last-mile" connectivity issues. We implemented two significant changes to our deployment pipeline:

  1. Graceful PgBouncer Shutdown: We updated the deployment logic to send a SIGINT to old PgBouncer instances, allowing a 10-second window before a spec recreation. This prevents "connection reset by peer" errors during rolling updates.
  2. WAL Archiving Logic: We adjusted our Write-Ahead Logging (WAL) handling to treat declared-off archiving as an intentional state rather than a system failure. This reduces noise in our monitoring dashboards and prevents false-positive alerts during maintenance windows.

Communication and Inbound Data Processing

As our platform scales, how we interact with users and handle asynchronous data becomes more complex.

Intelligent Email Threading

We have improved our inbound mail processing (#31227) to better tolerate multi-ticket email threads. The system now intelligently dedupes replies on inbound mail, ensuring that a single conversation doesn't trigger redundant support tickets or duplicate data entries. This keeps our internal state clean and ensures that user communications are mapped to the correct context.

Improved Data Extraction Accuracy

We also performed maintenance on our worker playbooks, removing stale entries for specific e-commerce sites to ensure our anti-bot handling remains precise and efficient. Stale playbooks can lead to inefficient resource usage; by pruning these, we ensure our workers use the most up-to-date logic for navigating complex web structures.

Implementation Guide

For developers using our Python SDK, these changes are mostly transparent, but the improved error messaging will be immediately apparent in your try/except blocks.

If you are managing large-scale crawls, you can now use the following pattern to monitor your environment more effectively.

Bash
# Example of checking service status via curl
curl -X GET https://api.alterlab.io/v1/services/status \
  -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_KEY" \
  -d '{"include_worker_metadata": true}'

Takeaway

This week's updates focus on hardening the AlterLab platform. By improving worker observability, fixing critical API logging bugs, and refining our deployment orchestration, we are ensuring a more stable and predictable environment for your data pipelines.

Summary of changes:

  • Observability: Worker metadata now available in JSON services.
  • API: Fixed TypeError in spend limit error handlers.
  • Infra: Added SIGINT grace period for PgBouncer and refined WAL archiving.
  • Logic: Improved email deduplication and cleaned up worker playbooks.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can read worker metadata directly from the JSON services endpoint to gain deeper visibility into your scraping tasks. This provides technical insights into the specific worker instance handling your request.
We fixed a bug where spend_limit error handlers would raise a TypeError due to incorrect logging arguments. The API now correctly handles budget constraints using structured logging.
During infrastructure updates, we now use a SIGINT signal to gracefully pre-stop old PgBouncer instances for 10 seconds. This ensures connection stability and prevents abrupt failures during spec recreations.
