Akamai Bot Manager is Akamai's enterprise bot detection product that runs at the CDN edge globally, intercepting requests before they reach origin servers. It uses a sensor-based approach: JavaScript sensors embedded in protected pages collect device signals (hardware, fonts, Canvas, timing) and transmit them back to Akamai's scoring infrastructure via POST requests.
Bot Manager applies these scored signals alongside TLS fingerprint classification and IP reputation to assign a bot score to each request. Requests below threshold pass; requests above threshold receive a 403, challenge page, or are silently delivered degraded content. The sensor payload uses obfuscated JavaScript that changes frequently to resist analysis.
Akamai protection is most common on large retail sites, financial services, and airlines — high-value targets for inventory scraping, price monitoring, and credential stuffing. Consistently accessing Akamai-protected sites requires correctly responding to sensor requests with plausible browser-generated values, matching expected TLS and HTTP/2 profiles, and using residential IPs with positive reputation scores. AlterLab's advanced tiers handle Akamai-protected targets.
